A Sense of Proportion
A "response," by definition, is a response *to something* - it has a proximate cause or, better, occasion. But whether a response is duly proportionate depends not simply on whatever occasioned it, but on an estimation of the overall context which frames the occasioning event. Hence something may be deemed the "last straw" - and then the response addresses the entire chain of causes, and the ramifications thereof.
