About the last time I heard someone described as a popinjay, I should think.

Good one, Steve.

One could have fun for hours dredging up antiquated terms - mining them from 19th century (or earlier) English authors.

As a synonym to yours, how about "coxcomb"?

A term of derision I'd like to see make a comeback is: "jackanapes." Maybe in the presidential debates?!
