Homo Homini Lupus (Updated)
To my knowledge, this is one of the most heartbreaking, angering, and revolting stories to have come out of Iraq.
If only someone could find Atwar Bahjat's bestial killers and give them the Mussolini treatment - or the Dostoyevsky treatment followed by the Mussolini treatment.
...
I hear the voice of - I think it's - Horace, reminding me, in effect, that "bestial" is insulting to the beasts.
And whatever is good enough for a beast is too good for the murderers of Atwar Bahjat.
Update:
The past couple of days have seen a deluge of visitors here - owing to this post being mentioned over at slate.com (now there's a way to create an infinite loop!). There apparently is reason to doubt whether the video referenced in the Times article actually records the murder of Atwar Bahjat; or, alternatively, a Nepalese man (one would have thought that, say, the account of the video showing a topless woman would rule out the alleged Nepalese victim - but no matter).
This is ground on which Angels ought to fear to tread, but I have enough of something in me - be it "male chauvinism" or chivalry - to be relieved if the poor soul who is slaughtered on camera is not Atwar Bahjat. But the balefulness of the act is hardly reduced thereby - and therefore my sentiments about the filth who carried out the deed remain essentially the same.
